Priming. Plus 4 Coats.

This is the QUICKEST little post, because my next bookshelf post was going to be way too long and it’s been SNOWING OUTSIDE so frankly, I don’t have the attention span for a super long post because SNOW!!!!! We’re also supposed to be getting a LOT more over the next week.

Okay, really it was just going to be too long of a post, so I needed to break it up, but if I can also do that while proclaiming my love of my favorite season FINALLY COMING TO VISIT, then I am going to multi-task like that. All. Post. Long.

This post is about color. There are definitely some construction things – like how we hang the shelves – that will come in the next post.

The bookshelves are going to be the same shade as the wall – just in a semi-gloss. But first – I primed EVERYTHING.

The doorway frame makes a great ledge for a can of soda. Until you’re on the ground a realize you’ve left it up there and then it’s a terrible place to leave a drink. Let that be a pro-tip tp future party-goers.

Once the priming was done, I started the painting. Dark colors are terrible when they go up the first time. TERRIBLE.

I truly had a “Oh my God, what have I done” moment here.

You know what makes you happier when you think you’ve messed up the painting? Maybe this snow will make you forget the last picture. Let’s give it a try.

It’s fine. It’s all fine. It’s going to be fine.

See? It’s so much better once you get a few coats on. Why can’t I learn that things will just be fine?

The color is “Posh Red” by Valspar, and it’s SO SO HARD to photograph to get the shade right. Primed, with 4 coats.

When you stand further back it looks even better.

All the shelves got glued and clamped together.

I added some red to the gray primer to help out – I think it did, but it’s SO PINK. Kind of fun, kind of terrifying, as though I’m going for “Pepto Bismol Chic.”

I’ll get into the shelf system and how it works in the next post – but they look so good up!

I’m so pleased with how this turned out. I wanted the red to be dramatic and bold, but also not overbearing. It probably is for some people, but not for us. It looks really great!
