Back TEN YEARS AGO, I wrote a post about several things we purchased at a moving sale. One of the things we purchased was this desk.
The desk was made by the Auglaize Furniture Company in New Bremen, Ohio. This undoubtedly was part of their “novelty furniture” line.
I think what makes it “novelty” is several super cool features – This writing desk pops out…..
….and opens up….
….and has a place for your inkwell…..
…..and this cool pop up gadget holder…..
…..and a panel that hides a hidden bookshelf (it’s missing on one side).
What *I* love about this desk if that it’s beautiful on all sides – it’s what I call a “floater,” meaning it will look beautiful in any part of any room. Here’s what I wrote about it in the initial blog :
Exactly the size I want for my future studio (imagine a chandelier above, of course).
So, TEN YEARS AGO, I already knew what was happening with this piece. (So naturally, my clairvoyant self keeps Tarot cards in the secret drawer.)
I’m USUALLY not lazy, but I decided to be here. Initially, I wanted to re-veneer the top. This was definitely the roughest part of the piece.
But I decided not to.
The rest of it really just needed cleaned up!
I used Restor-a-finish on the rest of the piece, and it really brought it back to life. If that HADN’T worked, I would have done a light sand and stain.
So much better!
But the top. And I was really nervous about veneering – and was worried it would look too new against the rest of the piece. (That sounds way better than being lazy, right?)
So, what did I do?
Marble.
We found a remnant, and had it cut to size. Doug jokes that the theme of of the house is “More is More is More,” so why not lean into that?
Also of note, if you want to create an elaborately horrendous bruise on your thigh, might I suggest a desk like this?
I love this.
There are actually two desks in the room – this one came off of Facebook Marketplace, and is my computer desk. It’s modern, but looks a bit vintage.
I love having two desks in the room. I am ALWAYS working on multiple things, and like to be able to go back and forth between them.
This one is my centerpiece. The “dreaming” space.
It’s the rock (literally!) that the room is built around!
(Yes, there is stained glass. We are all currently in “I’m-Catching-Up-And-Things-Have-Been-Done-That-I-Haven’t-Written-About Land.” I hope you like it here, because we have a bit more to go.
