It’s Kind of Dormy In Here

At the end of the summer, I posted a “here is where the room is now” post, and showed you a glimpse of the bed and promised I would give more details. Spoiler alert – the bed isn’t done yet, but here are some pictures of the process to date!

Here is the sketch I made of this side of the room. The idea is to have a twin bed / daybed that can function three ways – as a place to read and relax, extra space for a guest, and storage for Doug’s many trombones (which is weird to the general public, but it is what it is!).

We knew we would have to design and build this ourselves, because something off the shelf wouldn’t work. We found this skinny door at Peoria Architectural Salvage, which seemed like it would be a great front for the bed, so this is our jumping off point for the design.

Bonny says hi!

This is on it’s side. It’s going to be a tall bed, but settle down. It’s not this tall.

Here’s the top of the bed, laying on the floor.

Oakley for scale!

I don’t know what’s happening here. A curtain on a rod not strong enough for the fabric, a shop vac, and a plate. Apparently I had a snack here while measuring and sewing curtains? REALISM.

It holds me, so I guess I can nap here! Huzzah!

This is the top rail, that the door will be screwed to. Doug glued two 1×3” boards together, and then the CLAMPS HAD A BLOCK PARTY!

After the glue set, they needed planed.

“But Amy, this seems cool! Is there a video?”

I’m so glad you asked!

This piece got added to the front of the bed. This is where the door will be mounted.

You can see off to the left, a leaning piece of plywood. Those are the fronts for the sides.

This space in the window is the PERFECT size for a extra long twin mattress. It’s perfect. And without the door, it’s giving college dorm vibes.

New Hiding Spot! ALL THE STORAGE!

It’s a little tall. But, there’s a little step stool to get up to it, which is VERY VICTORIAN! So, Imma roll with it.

It needs the door, hardware, and staining! It’s going to be amazing!

  1. That’s an ingenious use for an antique door. I love seeing it all come together.

The fact that an extra long twin bed can fit in that window space gives scale to the room.

I like that your rooms are designed to be beautiful but also functional.
